Goodbye, Tok Samad

Al-Fatihah.

Alahyarham Tok Samad Ismail passed away earlier this evening.

He is an ex-journalist.

He is an ex-ISA detainee.

He fought for free media.

He fought health issues.

He was a fighter.

He is our Bapa Kewartawanan.

His presence will always be felt in the hearts of many journalists.

His memory will live on in the hearts of those who know him.

He leaves behind a wife and children to carry on the legacy.

May have a great afterlife.

'For all great things must come to an end.'

'Khun Faya-Khun' (Surah Yasiin) For what He wills, will be.

Amiin.

Hello Aiman,

Am very proud you posted obituary of Pak Samad. I don't know him personally nor had met him.

Pak Samad's place in Malaysian history is well assured. As a journalist par excellence, he shaped public opinion. He was not only Tokoh Wartawan but also recognised internationally culminating in the Magsaysay Award which is an Asian equivalent of Nobel Peace Prize.

He raised national consciousness and a threat to the British. For that he was detained twice by the colonial master.

Unfortunately and sadly he was to be incarcerated by the very country he loved so much. This was the cruelest cut of all being framed as an enemy of state. His family suffered along with him during those years.

Malaysia would not be the same without men and women like Pak Samad. They shun fame and fortune and power.

Aiman, you are only 13. For your age, you are already a giant among men.

Aiman dear,

I am so touched by this tribute to my father from someone so young.

Jazaka Allah Khair.

God Bless.

Aiman,

You are highly intelligent and perceptive about life. After reading all that you had written, you are not one who just drift along and wait things to happen or flow with the crowd.

You don't take a back seat and constantly standing up to be counted. Because you always challenge the status quo, you "sometimes get into trouble."

Don't mistake a person's status and age synonymous with wisdom and maturity.

In the real world people are driven by self-interest. They mask their selfish intention with pious words. Tapi their akhlak tak match their words.

No matter what the consequences, we must stay on the path of truth and righteousness. God will prevail for us.

There's no doubt God will put us to the test. Pure gold is not afraid of fire. The dross will be burned away.

Keep close to God and He will reward you. At times He seems far away but He is near.

Selamat Ramadan Al-Mubarak
